Trash AWAY, Inc. named Business Recycling Partner
September 2010

The City of Alexandria Solid Waste Division is proud to recognize Trash Away, Inc for its outstanding recycling program at the Carlyle Towers, a 553 unit luxury condo and townhouse complex at 2151 Jamieson Ave with over 1100 residents. Trash Away’s integrated trash and recycling program maximizes the waste diversion rate at Carlyle Towers by providing the residents a convenient floor by floor collection system that is easy to use.

Keys to the success of this program include:

  • Convenient storage containers with adequate capacity on each floor of the building.
  • Daily service of the trash rooms to prevent overflows of material
  • Clear and easy to understand educational materials posted in every trash room and provided to all residents by the building management.
  • Cleaning Staff support for the collection system.

This recycling collection system encourages a high level of participation because residents constantly reminded to recycle each time they visit the trash room. The result is not only a high level of recycling support, but a high diversion rate as well. Trash Away estimates that the Carlyle Towers recycles approximately 65 tons of mixed paper, cardboard and commingled containers per year or almost 20% of the Carlyle Tower’s waste stream. They hope to achieve their 25% recycling goal for 2010.

Trash AWAY, Inc. Teaches Recycling at Northern Virginia School

In cooperation with Fairfax County, Va. schools, Trash AWAY, Inc. taught students at Sydenstricker Elementary School in Springfield about the do's and don'ts of recycling.

Members of the Trash AWAY, Inc. team—and a Trash AWAY, Inc. truck—visited the Northern Virginia elementary school and taught students important lessons about the environment, recycling and the importance of protecting the planet.

Each student received a goodie bag that contained pens created from recycled materials. They also climbed aboard the Trash AWAY, Inc. truck, beeped the horn and had a great time!

Metals

  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours—or the equivalent of a half gallon of gasoline.
  • 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute!
  • Once an aluminum can is recycled it can be part of a new can within six weeks.
  • During the time it takes you to read this sentence 50,000, 12-ounce aluminum cans are made.
  • An aluminum can that is thrown away still will be a can 500 years from now!
  • There is no limit to the amount of times aluminum can be recycled.
  • We use more than 80 billion aluminum soda cans every year.
  • Every ton of recycled steel saves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,000 pounds of coal and 40 pounds of limestone.


Glass

  • Every month we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper.
  • The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.
  • A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose—even longer if it's in a landfill.


Trash/Lanfills

  • Although 75 percent of our trash can be recycled the EPA set a national goal of 25 percent for 1992.
  • The first real recycling program was introduced in New York City in the 1890s.
  • By 1924, 83 percent of American cities were separating some trash items to be reused.
  • About one-third of an average dump is made up of packaging material!
